My name is Trevor Murry and I have been the director of music at First Christian Church since July, 2018. I believe the role of music in any church is to aid the congregation to lift its mind and heart in worship. The Sunday service at First Christian follows an age-old structure whose constituent parts each serve a particular purpose. Each week we gather, are called to discipleship, pray for common needs, share communion at the Lord’s table, and are then commissioned to go forth to build God’s kingdom. Our music draws from both traditional and contemporary sources to reflect the different feelings each part of our worship is meant to evoke in us. First Christian is blessed to have both a Steinway baby grand piano and the fourth organ to be ever built by Taylor and Boody Organbuilders. First Christian is also blessed by the talents of our church members who provide music in our adult and youth vocal choirs as well as in our bell choir. We also have a number of instrumentalists who join with us to enhance our worship.
Music can be a divisive issue for a congregation. Each of us brings experiences and expectations of worship that can be very diverse. By striving to find quality music from a variety of sources old and new, the hope is that there is something for everyone that can bring an experience of God, whether it be quiet and meditative or upbeat and celebratory. I also personally believe our music should be inclusive and inviting. All who have interest in contributing to our music ministry are always welcome, whatever one’s area of interest may be. I personally really enjoy the opportunity to creatively collaborate in unusual ways. It can often lead to wonderful experiences.
It is an honor and pleasure to serve First Christian in this capacity and I am grateful for the church’s trust in forging our future worship together.
