ABOUT

Pure and Simple

Welcome the our church!  You have found the website of First Christian Church in Vincennes, Indiana.  My name is Peter Haskins and I am the Senior Minister.  First Christian Church is a proud member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  We are here to offer you something: a church family.  I want to invite you to be a part of our vibrant, growing church family here at First Christian Church located at 319 Broadway in historic downtown Vincennes.

First Christian is a safe place for you to grow in your relationship with God.  First Christian is a safe place for your family and kids to grow in their relationship with God.  First Christian is a safe place to belong in an oftentimes chaotic and confusing world we live in today.

Our worship time is 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings...dress is casual, just come as you are...you are already a part of our church family...

Our Core Values

1

WE PREACH GRACE NOT GUILT

We believe that Jesus extends grace to everyone and that we should follow in his steps. Who are we to pass judgment and not extend grace, when we ourselves have sinned. We believe we should love the sinner, not banish them.

2

OPEN COMMUNION TABLE

We believe that Jesus intended for the communion to be for everyone. Which means that anyone and everyone is welcome to take communion with us. Just as you are!

3

FAMILY

We value all family units.  We seek to support, encourage, and celebrate all families.  We are all created and adopted by God as part of Gods family. We have created a safe space and close-knit children's/youth group, along with a family like small groups for our church family.

4

WE ARE A CHURCH WITHOUT WALLS

Jesus called us to go out and spread the word of God. We believe that this is not done enough. We make it a priority to go outside of the church walls to reach the lost and broken. We hope that you will join us in doing so.

Our Beliefs

We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s Table, as Christ has invited us.

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is part of a wider faith community known as the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. Founded as part of the wave of evangelism and social reform which swept North America in the early 19th century, As Disciples:

• We join in a symbolic meal of bread and grape juice each Sunday, and all are invited to this table. Thus we symbolize that God’s abundance of love, food, and hospitality are offered to the whole world, regardless of one’s faith tradition, economic condition, political philosophy, or sexual orientation.

• We believe that all Christians are part of one body of Christ. The denominational and doctrinal differences which divide the Church are a scandal. One day all Christians will be reunited as one great fellowship of love and service. Jesus prayed that all of his followers might be one, “so that the world may believe” (John 17:21). Today we embody the unity that we seek by serving and worshiping together with Christians of various denominational and doctrinal backgrounds whenever possible.

• We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, and proclaim him Lord and Savior of the world. This belief is the only basis for membership in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

• We believe that faith is based on scripture, reason, and experience. The Bible tells stories of the mighty acts of God throughout history. We take these stories seriously, not necessarily literally. God gave us minds to interpret these stories in the light of both reason and human experience. The wisdom of the ages found in the Bible points beyond itself to Holy Mystery and provides guidance for practical, daily living.

• We accept God’s call of service and witness. Jesus gave us both the Great Commandment (to love God and neighbor) and the Great Commission (to proclaim the good news of God’s love to the whole world). We trust in the power of the Holy Spirit to help us do both.
